ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY RELATIONS (UR) DIVISION

University Relations (UR) builds enduring relationships, resources, and understanding to enable UCSC to provide educational opportunities, create knowledge, and transform lives. UR provides leadership, strategic planning, and central services in the areas of alumni relations, fundraising, media relations, publications, campus web development, public events, and government and community relations. In addition, UR provides support for the UC Santa Cruz Foundation, a separate not-for-profit corporation.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Director of Development (Annual Giving and Memberships Programs) will manage a comprehensive on-going annual giving program. The program, which currently raises approximately $600,000 annually, is targeted to raise progressively more annual contributions from UCSC alumni, parents, friends and students.

PRIMARY REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reporting to the Assistant Vice Chancellor (AVC), Constituent Engagement, the Director will supervise a Marketing Manager (Annual Giving and Memberships Program), a Telephone Outreach Program (TOP) Manager, and a Development Assistant. The Director will work closely with the Director of Alumni Relations, the Alumni Outreach Coordinator, and with the development officers based in the Gift Activity Centers (GAC's) and other departments, providing strategic leadership for restricted and unrestricted support for the University and its GAC's. 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES

* Develop annual fund program goals and create strategic and tactical plans to achieve those goals.
* Expand programs for the telephone outreach program, reunion giving, direct mail, e-solicitations, on-line giving, senior class gifts, specific, and targeted appeals.
* Lead personal solicitation of special gifts ($1,000 - $10,000).
* In collaboration with the Marketing Manager (Annual Giving and Memberships Program), Alumni Outreach Coordinator, and the Director of Alumni Relations, develop a strategic plan to market membership in the UCSC Alumni Association.
* Implement a robust and effective membership solicitation program.
* Perform other duties as requested by the AVC for Constituent Engagement. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES

* Knowledge of contemporary methods of institutional advancement and fundraising
* Management, organizational, strategic planning, and pragmatic consensus-building skills and experience
* Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience
* Substantial, progressively responsible experience managing an annual fund or comparable fund development or membership program
* Success in fund raising, emphasizing experiences in identifying, cultivating, and bringing to successful conclusion annual gifts from alumni, parents, individuals, and corporate matching support
* Sound knowledge of the full spectrum of development principles and activities including gift policies, solicitations, administration, working with high-level volunteer committees, and the ability to apply this knowledge creatively to specific fund raising projects 
* Ability to plan, organize, and manage an annual giving program, including volunteer leadership, prospect identification, and oversight of the production of fund raising materials
* Ability to develop direct mail and telephone outreach program strategies
* Understanding of the mission, goals, objectives, and priorities of a major research institution
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills
* Ability to work with volunteers and develop volunteer networks to support the development and advocacy goals of the campus
* Track record of supporting diversity
* Demonstrated good judgment, skills and ability to set priorities, and complete multiple and complex projects under pressure
* Ability to work both independently and closely with others as part of a team
* Good computer skills
* Strong ability to commit to fostering the UCSC Principles of Community
