The Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing is being created with the mission building a nationally visible and excellent school that will educate nurses who will foster nursing excellence.  Its graduates will be researchers, educators, and leaders in practice, promoting health and improving access and quality of the health care system.  The School plans admit its first graduate students in 2010 and its first undergraduates in 2011.

Position Overview

The Major Gifts Development Officer will manage all major gifts fundraising programs for the School, including overseeing the implementation of long-term and short-term fundraising strategies in collaboration with the Associate Vice Chancellor and Assistant Dean and in coordination with Health System fundraising priorities and program goals. He/she will manage a prospect portfolio of 120-150 active high capacity donors and prospects and will develop and manage close working relationships with leadership, volunteers, and donors.

The Major Gifts Development Officer will spend approximately eighty percent of work time on active management of his/her assigned prospect portfolio, including setting annual fundraising goals, objectives, and evaluating outcomes. Approximately twenty percent of time will be devoted to other fundraising activities, including solicitations of special gifts under $25,000 and duties that focus on planning, coordinating, and executing fundraising strategies.

Reporting Relationships

The position reports to the Assistant Dean of Advancement for the School and is classified as MSP II. The position does not supervise any staff.

Responsibilities

* As assigned by, and in consultation with senior management, coordinate the identification, cultivation, solicitation, closing, and stewarding of major gift prospects with an emphasis on face-to-face meetings with prospects.
* Create and execute an annual fundraising plan for the School.
* Help build prospect base and build strategies with development consultants.
* Coordinate fundraising efforts, including developing annual targets for prospect cultivation, stewardship and solicitation as well as annual revenue goals.
* Maintain an active list of fundraising activities aligned with the approved fundraising priorities as assigned.
* Create opportunities to support the Associate Vice Chancellor and Assistant Dean in major donor prospect relationships, including:
 - proposing planned strategies leading to gifts
 - briefing them in preparation for development-related meetings
 - drafting or planning letters to donors and prospects and comments for donor gatherings
 - setting and coordinating the Associate Vice Chancellor’s individual meetings with many key prospects.
* Utilize the services and systems of the Development Prospect Management and Tracking System (PMATS) to track relationships with major gift prospects, in order to maintain a well-designed and documented prospect portfolio as well as adherence to university gift policies, operating procedures, and practices.
* Attend various meetings and University events, including some activities on weekends, evenings, and out of town, in order to cultivate and/or solicit donors.
* Manage volunteer involvement to support major gift fundraising efforts. Provide leadership and support to volunteer boards, business advisory groups, donor clubs, and fundraising committees. Create opportunities for volunteers to develop their leadership and fundraising skills.
* Participate in face-to-face solicitations with volunteer fundraisers.
*Work with UCDHS Marketing and Public Relations to ensure that information regarding development activities is presented in an accurate, compelling, optimal and timely manner in publications and communications.
* Initiate and lead donor recognition and publicity. Design and execute tailored acknowledgments and recognition of large gifts in coordination with University Relations Office of Development.
* Collaborate with all other personnel in the Health System and the UC Davis advancement community. Participate in various Health Sciences Advancement and/or other University-wide fundraising committees, as well as taking on special fundraising assignments.
* Perform other duties as assigned.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

* 5+ years of progressively responsible professional experience in comprehensive development and fundraising programs, preferably in the field of health sciences and/or higher education
* A desire to work for a new School with a new fundraising program
* A proven track record in annual and capital fundraising
* A general understanding of medical center programs
* Demonstrated ability to recruit, develop, motivate, and manage volunteer boards and programs
* Experience in the area of planned giving
* Proven special events fundraising experience
* Ability to continually maintain and enhance professional knowledge and acquire expertise in fundraising best practices
* Outstanding organizational, time management and analytical skills and the ability to independently manage multiple fundraising activities and initiatives
* Ability to articulate the case for higher education, and UC Davis in particular
* Ability to write effectively, to deliver presentations (i.e. case support), and to demonstrate interpersonal communication skills in a variety of solicitation and relationship building settings
* Demonstrated ability to be a spokesperson on a variety of school/college/department cases for support.
* Demonstrated proficiency with computer software, including Prospect Management Tracking System or similar prospect databases
* Ability to understand and navigate a large research university environment
* A high level of initiative, creativity and energy, and ability to work independently without close supervision
* Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends
* Valid driver’s license
* Willingness to travel in and out of the UC Davis Health System region
* Bachelor’s degree
