POSITION SUMMARY

The Major Gifts Director develops and manages cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies for major donors and prospects encompassing significant individual gifts and family foundation contributions, with an emphasis on gifts of $100,000 or more. This role is highly interactive and attends meetings, events, and draws people together to develop and maintain key relationships. 

Working with the Land and Outreach Departments, the Major Gifts Director manages the League's major gifts program and staff, oversees the League's relationship with planned giving donors, and the administers matured planned gifts.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reporting to the Director of Development,  the position  manages the Major Gifts Officer/Memorial and Honor Grove Program , the Major and Planned Gifts Associate, and a Planned Giving consultant..

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

GENERAL

* Identify, establish and cultivate relationships with potential major donors, solicit gifts, and provide acknowledgement. Maintain ongoing relationships with leadership and major donors and provide stewardship to committed givers.
* With the Executive Director, the Director of Development, Director of Outreach, Land Department, the Board, and consultants, design and coordinate leadership fundraising activities for prospective major donors and for cultivation and recognition of current major donors.
* Attend all fundraising events and other community-related events as appropriate and necessary.
* Oversee the coordination of planned giving as part of major gift strategies. 
* Oversee the receipt, record keeping and tracking of planned gift commitments and matured planned gifts.

PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT

* Direct the prospecting, cultivation, solicitation, recognition and stewardship activities of a Major Gifts Officer.
* Oversee the Memorial and Honor Grove Program..
* Direct efforts of Major and Planned Gifts Associate..
* Review and oversee procedures and systems to identify donors and establishes new procedures and campaigns as needed.
* Work with the Director of Development in annual planning, budgeting and goal setting of major and planned gifts.
* Assist in the recruitment of leadership volunteer solicitors and develop their fundraising capabilities. 

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

* Forecast, supervise and approve all expenditures in relation to budget.
* Forecast and meet revenue goals for major and planned gifts.
* Act as a resource to the CFO regarding interpretation of donor restrictions and valuation of planned gifts.

OTHER

* Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

* 5+ years of progressively responsible fundraising experience, with 3+ years experience in major gifts
* Demonstrated success in securing major gifts from individuals and institutions
* Knowledge and some experience with planned giving.
* Experience with project management and event planning including vendor management, logistics, graphic design, and tracking systems.
* Superior interpersonal, oral and written communication and presentation skills with the ability to represent the League's mission and interests to a diverse group of people.
* Proven experience with the development and implementation of administrative functions.
* Excellent user of office technology and information systems (including Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, PowerPoint) and fundraising databases, preferably Raiser's Edge. 
* Ability to handle calmly and efficiently, situations ranging from routine to highly complex.
* Demonstrated ability to multi-task and work successfully in a fast-paced environment with a high degree of attention to detail and minimum supervision.
* Ability to work independently as well as an effective member of a diverse team
* Personal passion for preserving and protecting the natural world with a belief in the mission, principles, and values of Save-the-Redwoods League's approach to conservation.
* Bachelor's degree

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

* Travel periodically, predominantly within California.
* Perform some weekend and evening responsibilities.
* Possess a valid driver's license and safe driving record.
* Regularly sit at a desk or computer workstation. 
* Frequently move about the office to collaborate with colleagues. 
* Frequently walk on uneven ground while working off-site.
* Occasionally lift, carry or otherwise move and position objects weighing up to 30 pounds
