Founded in 1974, Swords to Plowshares is a community-based, not-for-profit organization that provides counseling and case management, employment and training, housing, and legal assistance to more than 1,500 homeless and low-income veterans annually in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. POSITION OVERVIEW

Work with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors in supervising contribution income and managing all aspects of  development and communications.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

The position reports to the Executive Director and manages a Communications Manager,  two Development Associates, an Individual Gifts and Events Coordinator, and a Major Gifts Manager.

RESPONSIBILITIES

DEVELOPMENT
* Set, implement, and monitor contributed income goals in consultation with the Executive Director, Development Committee, and Board of Directors.
* Design, present, and implement an annual giving campaign including strategies and goals for individuals, corporations, foundations, events, and other sources of income.
* Prepare monthly development reports and present them to the Development Committee.
* Coordinate the major donor solicitation team made up of the Executive Director, Board Members, and other volunteers.
* Manage a portfolio of prospects (primarily individuals and family foundations) with a focus on securing gifts of $1,000+ annually.
* Assist the Development Committee and the Governance Committee in identifying and recruiting Board members who will carry out development tasks. 
* Evaluate and report on development activities and make recommendations for changes.
* Design and coordinate the individual giving campaign, including direct mail, personal solicitations, special events, stewardship activities and other strategies selected in the annual plan.
* Oversee grant writing, research, and reporting to foundation and corporate funders.
* Coordinate all special events, donor receptions, cultivation events, and benefits.
* Oversee maintenance of giving records and ensure timely acknowledgement of all gifts.
* Supervise and evaluate development department staff.

COMMUNICATIONS
* Oversee the production of agency materials, including stationery, brochures, and other institutional materials as required.
* Ensure that the agency brand and logo is used consistently in development materials.
* Supervise design, production and distribution of all development and communication materials, including brochures, letters, inserts and invitations.
* Oversee two direct mail solicitations annually; letter writing, working with mail house, designers, etc.
* Produce the semi-annual newsletter.
* Produce the agency annual report.
* Maintain the website.

GENERAL
* Maintain written office procedures.
* Develop and monitor the department budget.
* Participate in organization long-range planning.
* Serve as a member of the Senior Management Team.
* Perform related duties as requested by the Executive Director.
* Perform all functions of the position within reasonable accommodations.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

* Five or more years of professional development experience
* Experience in a broad range of development activities including individual major gifts, annual giving, and institutional giving
* Experience managing and mentoring a team of professional staff
* Proven written and verbal communication skills
* Strong organizational skills
* High level of computer proficiency, including knowledge of MS Office and donor databases
* Ability to produce high quality work with accuracy and attention to detail
* Capacity to manage multiple projects, adjust quickly to shifting priorities, and meet deadlines
* Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends
* Ability to work independently and as a team member
