ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW

Founded in 1977, Pathways is a community based, not-for-profit organization that provides various health services to families in the San Francisco Bay Area. Pathways offers a comprehensive array of health and supportive services: from home health to hospice care; from private duty non-medical attendant to personal care; from elder care to care for children with life-threatening illnesses; and from grief support to community education.

Pathways had an annual budget of $41,900,000 in the 2009-10 fiscal year, of which $1,400,000 came from contributions and grants.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Director of Major Giving (DMG) develops and implements the major giving program. The DMG identifies, develops and implements solicitation plans for current donor prospects, including gift upgrading and planned giving options. He/she expands Pathways’ major giving prospect group using board members, Pathways Foundation staff and Pathways Home Health & Hospice leadership and volunteers when appropriate.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reporting to the VP for Community Relations and Philanthropy, the DMG will collaborate with the Pathways Executive and Management teams, participate as a member of the Foundation Program team,
and provide guidance, support and assistance to the Pathways Hospice Board to assure success in their fundraising efforts. The DMG will not have any direct reports in the immediate future.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Planning 
* Design, document, and implement a systematic and integrated major giving program that encompasses individual relationship building cultivation events, and creating giving and naming opportunities. 
* Develop a compelling case for support which can be customized for individual donors and groups.
* Develop a recognition and stewardship plan in collaboration with the Director of Annual Giving and Hospice Operations.
* Prepare yearly major giving program budget.
Identifying, Cultivating, and Soliciting Major Donors
* Actively identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major donor prospects to achieve annual targets.
* Create strategies for cultivating and building relationships with these prospects and matching the organization's needs with the donor's interests.
* Conduct research on donors and prospective donors as needed. 
* Create strategies, approaches, and contact for planned solicitations; prepare the board and others to assist in outreach. 
* Develop and execute strategies to utilize Foundation board members in relationship-building with donors. 
* Execute stewardship strategies to build lifelong and planned giving.
* Cultivate relationships with targeted donors and prospective donors, acting as professional point of contact for these individuals.
* Solicit major financial donations from targeted donors through face-to-face meetings and related fundraising techniques.
* Ensure that new major donors are identified and developed, have opportunities to increase their level of support annually, and enjoy a close relationship to Pathways. 
* Work collaboratively with Foundation staff, Public Relations and Communications Managers on correspondence, briefing and solicitation materials, brochures, follow-up materials, newsletter articles, and other materials related to the major giving program in accordance with Pathways style and writing guidelines.
* Propose, develop and recommend appropriate cultivation events for prospects and major donors.
* Represent Pathways through the solicitation of speaking opportunities and other opportunities to engage with potential donor prospects and enhance the face of Pathways in select communities.
Ensuring Complete Records and Reports of Major Giving Program
* Lead and manage the production of management monitoring reports, annual budgets and specific resource materials relating to major gifts activity. 
* Maintain accurate and complete records of all donor visits, interests, relevant fundraising information, and next steps in the process within the central donor database.
* Use Raiser's Edge 7.0 to track, project and analyze program results and run reports. 
* On a monthly basis, review income and expenditures for the major giving program, taking action to ensure the program budget targets are met.
Communicating and Collaborating
* Develop effective working relationships across the organization, particularly with organization leadership, clinical program management and staff, volunteer department, community relations, and bereavement staff. 
* Actively support effective communication practices and promote and maintain excellent teamwork.
* Ensure that adequate fundraising management and donor recognition systems are in place to recognize donors, volunteers and other members of the Pathways community for their efforts.
* Use recognition as a key tool in expressing appreciation for gifts, and for increasing donor commitment to supporting Pathways programs.
* Develop a thorough understanding of the Pathways organization, its history, culture, traditions, services, clients and programs and understand its base of financial support and the long and short term funding goals of the organization. 
* Perform other duties as assigned consistent with skills and training and the mission and goals of Pathways.

QUALIFICATIONS

* Background in major gifts fundraising and a 3-5 year track record of progressively responsible experience in development
* Demonstrated success in securing large individual gifts
* Knowledge of development principles, fundraising techniques, and ethics
* Knowledge of tax laws that impact charitable giving, personal assets and estates
* Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills that can engage and be receptive to donor interest and perspectives
* Strong planning and implementation skills: ability to prioritize own workload, meet deadlines and plan effectively to meet realistic fundraising goals 
* Strong problem solving and strategic thinking skills
* Well organized and goal-oriented approach, with the ability to focus on details
* Independence and self motivation with ability to quickly create a positive network of relationships in the diverse communities served by Pathways
* Strong public speaking and presentation skills, eagerness to be the face of Pathways in targeted communities 
* Excellent computer skills, including competency with internet research, Raiser's Edge, and Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook 
* Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends 
* Valid driver's license and vehicle
* Bachelor's degree

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Physical: Ability to sit for a number of hours and to do repetitive hand/wrist motion to manipulate computer keyboard, calculator and telephones
Sensory: Ability to hear, read, write and speak clearly for effective communication in writing, in person and via telephone
Mental: Ability to analyze data, problem solve, plan and perform varied, complex mental tasks; ability to organize work and to effectively manage multiple priorities
